Weight Loss Surgery in Mexico — Should You?
Weight loss surgery in Mexico has become very popular of late. One reason is if your insurance carrier won’t cover your surgery, the clinics in Mexico are much more affordable.
But should you consider Mexico weight loss surgery? Let’s take a look at it.
Why is it Popular to Have Bariatric Surgery in Mexico?
As I mentioned previously, the surgical procedure, including follow-up care, is much less expensive “south of the border”. I’ve been around to some of the big forums for weight loss surgeries, and I mostly see good reviews.
In part, it has to do with some surgeons doing nothing but surgical procedures, gastric bypass being the most common. When you do lots of surgeries day in and day out, you get to be pretty good at it. So these are the reasons why weight loss surgery in Mexico is becoming more and more popular.
What are the Negatives?
The first negative is that you need to spend time in Mexico. Not that Mexico is a bad place to visit, just that you will have to spend a fair amount of time away from home, if you have to travel. And of course, it costs money in addition to the weight loss surgery itself (place to stay, travel arrangements, etc.). However, as of late, “weight loss surgery spas” have opened up, which can help mitigate those costs.
Another is that the follow-up care will have to be done by a physician closer to you, instead of the surgeon who performed the surgery.
And of course I have to mention that not all surgeons are created equal. Of course that applies to surgeons here in the States as well, only if something (heaven forbid) should go wrong, you won’t have access to the surgeon.
In other words, it might not be a wise idea to choose a bariatric surgeon who hasn’t done a lot of gastric bypasses.
Weight Loss Surgery in Mexico
My thoughts are if your health insurance is covering your surgical procedure, it’s probably best to choose a surgeon local to you who has a good track record and plenty of experience.
If your insurance won’t cover you, it may be worth checking into weight loss surgery in Mexico. But if you choose to go this route, please do your homework! Don’t pick a surgeon solely based on cost, and do remember to calculate in the cost of travel and living expenses.
